J. Michael McLaughlin has been living in and writing about the Lowcountry for more than 20 years. During that time, his interests in history, architecture and the legendary Charleston lifestyle have led him into countless adventures. His writing has found its way into numerous regional and national magazines and his freelance work as an advertising and public relations consultant has captured national marketing awards.

Professional Background

Michael was raised on a farm in Indiana, but he's quick to point out it was in Southern Indiana, and "in Charleston, that makes a big difference." He graduated from Indiana University in 1967 with a B.S. degree in business-journalism, aiming for a Madison Avenue career in advertising. Instead, his first writing job turned out to be in Vietnam, where, as a war correspondent, he won a Bronze Star for his coverage of the 101st Airborne Division during the 1968 Tet Offensive. After a decade back home in Indiana as an award-winning writer-producer for several Midwestern ad agencies, he joined the writers' colony in Key West, Florida. And that's where he was living when 1979's Hurricane David forced him to evacuate the island and he discovered Charleston. Since then, he's considered himself "a born-again Southerner," writing about Charleston and the Lowcountry's charming, if idiosyncratic,
